World-renowned fashion photographer, Steven Meisel and design-based production company, Eyeball, have partnered with VOGUE magazine’s “VOGUE ITALIA” to develop the annual “Pret a Porter” spread into a classic issue of VOGUE ITALIA, showcasing different collections from the world’s biggest international fashion shows.
“When Sebastian Kim, studio manager of Steven Meisel presented us with the opportunity to partner with Steven Meisel to develop the largest fashion spread of the year, we responded with an enthusiastic, YES!” said Limore Shur, founder and creative director, eyeball. “We were excited by the prospect of working with a giant in fashion photography, on a project that would allow us to exercise our own creative freedom and capitalize on such a rare opportunity.”
Steven Meisel and Eyeball worked together to blend fashion, photography and graphic design in to an innovative 30-page spread for Vogue Italia’s most prominent issue of the year. This also required designing the front cover of the magazine itself.
Each spread became its own digital collage, designed to showcase the models in a moody, urban environment, with splashes of bright color standing out against the dark backdrops. Steven Meisel photographed his models on a green screen backdrop with as few physical props as possible. EyeballNYC composited these images on top of their digitally created backgrounds, which were pieced together from still photographs of New York City. The end result was a surrealistic juxtaposition of high fashion against a dark film noir cityscape.
From sewers to rooftops, derelict buildings to bridges, Eyeball designers canvassed and photographed New York City’s unique, timeless architecture. “Dark smokey alleys, low contrast, mood lighting and depth of field were combined to create strong foreground and background elements”, added Shur.
Eyeball designer Federico Saenz Recio worked with Eyeball creatives Julian Bevan and Raffi Simonian to blend all of the photographic imagery together, ultimately the team settled on a Film Noir style for the spread. Likened to his personal style, Saenz collaged together the photographs of New York architecture to construct a series of 1930′s film noir scenes. The result: a virtual set, designed to create the illusion of real-time and real-place.
