Tell us about something about Marina Cano Photography?
I am a landscape and wildlife Spanish photographer, based in Cantabria, in the North of Spain. With regards to my beginnings, I started when I was a teenager because of my father, he loved photography and he transmited that love to me. My photographs have been published around the world and I have won international awards.
I have an special commitment with the planet and their threatened wildlife and hope my work can touch the people heart. Photographers usually say that they ‘capture’ images, but for me the opposite is true, animals have captured me.
How did you get into Wildlife Photography?
Wildlife came easily as a part of my interest about beauty and Nature. I’m very lucky because I live 20 minutes away from Cabarceno, a park where animals live in semi-freedom conditions, and the biggest one in the world. In 2009 I published a large format book, it’s an intimate portrait of the Cabarceno stunning wildlife.
What’s your creative process like?
I love every moment from the taking of the pictures in the wild maybe with rain and cold. To sit in the warmth at my home and processing them. Then to share my pictures in international websites as photo.net or 500px. I also enjoy the feedback I get from people. Thats very rewarding and fulfilling for me.
Where do you find inspiration and why you like photography?
Nature and its beauty is a constant inspiration for me. The stunning planet where we live inspires me and propels me to remind and show other people the fragility extreme beauty around us if we keep looking and enjoying nature rather than destroying it for human consumerism. The danger is that future generations will not enjoy what we enjoy becasue of our disrespect for nature.
My work is about the celebration of nature and everything in it. I hope this comes across in my work. I have a unique aesthetic sense, and comes to me naturally. I studied the arts and music and I have a particular sense of beauty in everything that surrounds me. The city I live in Santander is incredible beautiful and the land around me is beautiful. My life is steeped in beauty and I then recreate the beauty I see around me through my eyes.
What are some tips you could give to people that really like your work?
In the begining with wildlife I was not able to go to Africa, and then I looked around me and try to do my best in Cabarceno, the largest wildlife park in Europe. I’m lucky to live at 20 minutes to this amazing place. Now I can travel to wild places and I can use everything I’ve learnt from Cabarceno in the last six years I spent there. So my advise is improve and learn as much as you can with the elements you have.
Can you name one great photographer that inspires you with his works and why?
My favourite photograhers that inspire me to reach further heights in my work are Steve Bloom for his breathtaking images, Miguel Lasa, because of his birds and his white bears, Gregory Colbert because of the magic around his work and Nick Brand because I feel very close to his esthetic.
