When did you realise photography was your field and how did you go about pursuing your passion? I was lucky to have supportive parents and they bought me my first camera when I was in grade two. From then on I used to photograph my super hero action Figures in various scenarios. I went to high school my parents enrolled me in the H.B. Beal art program, it encompassed many different disciplines but it was photography that I was drawn to, I was awarded the most promising photographer award. That's when I realized this is what I want to do with my life.
Have you ever had any formal teaching in photography, or is it a natural talent to you? After high school I attended Ryerson university in Toronto , my parents insisted I get a degree, luckily for me they didn't care in what.. I graduated from the photography program with an honors degree in bachelors applied art HBAA, no one has every asked to see my degree, but it made my parents happy.
Where do you find your inspiration and how does this translate into the photographs you take? I find inspiration in so many things, Movies, Paintings, the ballet even nature. The people who have influenced me are Alfred Hitchock, Wim Wenders, Wong Kar Wai, Richard Avedon, JD Salinger and E.M. Forester. I can't say how I specifically get my inspiration , it's all a big soup in my brain and somehow I clarify it with my photography.
Your fashion photography looks as though it's mainly taken on location. Do you prefer shooting on location or in the studio? I do a lot of location work, I really like to tell a story in my photography and going to exotic locations brings those stories alive, I love to travel and experience different cultures.
Do your models pose naturally or do you help engage them with the camera to achieve excellent results? I work closely with my models, my main focus is communication, I like to bring out the best in a model, Some models are naturals though , it's almost like a dance, when you get a certain rhythm going it becomes magic.
If you had one piece of advice for an emerging, young photographer, what would it be? To follow your dreams and trust your instincts, take inspiration from the world around you, not just other Photographers. Always be professional and polite to the people around you, your crew/team is one of your greatest assets, encourage them to be the best they can be.
Your "Garden Punch" series is very striking - Can you tell us more about this set? The original idea came from Caitlin Moneta, the fashion editor on that story, but we wanted to do something hard and aggressive with flowers, often we think of flowers and beauty as delicate, but the goal of that shoot was to show power and strength that is in beauty, women can be strong and beautiful.
