The Winners of National Geographic 2014 Photo Contest

December 23, 2014 by Bogdan Florin in Fine Art, Landscapes, Nature

Selected from more than 9,200 entries, a photo of a woman spotlighted by the glow of her phone on a crowded train was chosen as the grand-prize winner of the 2014 National Geographic Photo Contest. The photo, titled “A Node Glows in the Dark,” was shot by Brian Yen of Hong Kong. He has won $10,000 (USD) and a trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar in January 2015.

“I feel a certain contradiction when I look at the picture,. On the one hand, I feel the liberating gift of technology. On the other hand, I feel people don’t even try to be neighborly anymore, because they don’t have to.”

Yen’s photo won in the People category, and all three images will be published in National Geographic magazine.

The annual photo contest attracted entries from more than 150 countries. Contestants submitted photographs in three categories: People, Places and Nature. Judging consisted of multiple rounds of evaluation based on creativity, photography quality and genuineness/authenticity of the content.  The competition judges includes National Geographic photographers John Stanmeyer and Erika Larsen, as well as Keith Jenkins, Nat Geo's General Manager of Digital.

From unknown artists to lords, from photographers working for Hitler to war photographers taking pictures of the innocent victims, from Japanese erotic art to food photography, this third part of our visual journey is about diversity and tolerance. Photography changed the way we see and understand life. Some consider it an art, some see it as a reflection of reality, some even see it as a way of documenting history. Nevertheless, photography is an amazing way to love people, nature, and art. During history, many people became famous for the way they see the world through a viewfinder. From candid photography to fashion photography, from street snapshots to staged commercials, from landscape to architecture, photographers challenge themselves to find new and creative perspectives. Beside all, they tell us fascinating stories. We chose the most appreciated 100 of them and we will tell you their stories in four episodes. In no particular order, here are the first 25 of them.

BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY THROUGH THE LENS OF TOP RATED CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHERS
April 23, 2018

Photography is a medium of contradictions. It is both ridiculously easily and almost impossibly difficult. Being able to see things is pretty easy, but being able to capture a very moment is the difficult part. A good photo comprise many things, not only one must hit the shutter at the right moment in time, but the composition, color coordination, light and  perspective play a significant role too. A photographer is an editor of reality in trying to make sense of reality; he tries to distill the essence of his subject- a scene, feeling or persona, into a single, two- dimensional image.

We're waiting to get inspired to create the perfect piece of art, to build the next big thing or start a project we always dreamed about. We are curious to know what inspired our favorite artists, as if we could achieve the same results if we followed the steps of their creative process. Chasing for inspiration in the never ending world of social media platforms can sometimes be counter-productive. The key is to start doing something. Not tomorrow or next week, but today. Once you commit to getting started, momentum carries you. As Pablo Picasso, one of the most important figures of the 20th century, claimed "inspiration exists, but it has to find us working."
