Tell us about something about Michael Stonis Photography?
I like taking everyday life and putting a spin on it. My photography has evolved quite a bit so it's hard to summarize it, but I enjoy shooting raw and naturally at the same time.
How did you get into Fashion Photography?
I first got into photography shooting surfing in the water and my friends on surf trips. During those trips I really enjoyed learning about taking portraits and documenting people. Fashion photography seemed like the perfect vice to be able to execute my vision, from concepting, casting, lighting and capturing.
What is typically in your camera bag?
Right now I am mainly shooting with a 5DMK2. I have also been shooting with a Bronica medium format film camera and a few point and shoot 35mm cameras. I usually try to shoot editorial and commercial stuff with digital and personal shoots with film.
How has your shooting style and work ethic changed in time?
My shooting style has changed quite a bit over time. In the past it was more about learning so I would mimic different things I like but I would end of with all sorts of styles and lighting in my portfolio. Now I feel I have a style to my images and things are a bit more consistent. As for work ethic, it's about the same but I have a much better awareness on what I want to do, which has put purpose in my work.
What are some tips you could give to people that really like your work?
I try to always concept ideas inspired by everyday life. I think it helps keep things real and natural. I daydream alot and always keep a pen and pad of paper in the car. I’m always taking notes or scribbling down ideas.
Can you name some photographers that inspires you with their works and why?
I have a long list of photographer I follow. Off the top of my head:
- Camilla Akrans - For her lighting and tones.
- Guy Aroch - For the same reason's as Camilla
- Terry Richardson - For his raw images and energy
- Helmut Newton - For his originality and ideas
