Tell us about something about Marlon Advincula Photography?
I worked as a layout artist/photo retoucher in one of the most prestigious photography studio in Davao City , Philippines way back 2004. Two years after, I was promoted as a wedding photographer with one month training in photography (portraiture & wedding). Then the passion for photography began. I learned the fundamentals and I didn’t stop to learn more, I attended photography workshops, bought books and downloaded videos. When I bought my Nikon d90 two years ago, everything in my photography life changed. Marlon Advincula Photography is a combination of traditional and contemporary style of photography. My style of photography is a mixture of storytelling with artistic approach that includes proper lighting, getting the right emotion before clicking the shutter and setting up the right posing.
How did you get into Fashion Photography?
At first I was just shooting in the studio which focused more on portraiture. The “passion for fashion” started when I bought my own camera. I invited some of my friends for a photoshoot session, then later I saw the difference. I saw more colors, emotion, posing and I saw the trend. I had more control because it expresses a freedom of art. I attended workshops and I learned new techniques, and through fashion photography, I was able to meet creative people, know the deeper meaning of collaboration and of course, to express you art.
How do you keep yourself motivated and your photography creative, inspiring and fresh?
I used the first letter of my name ( which is “M” ) for MULTIDIMENSIONAL. It means that I don’t stick on one style. I always follow the trend , what people want and what my eyes see. I love dark & moody style, vibrant and vintage. I get my inspiration from magazines, music and movies. I also get inspired when ladies talk about the “fantasy world”. By interacting with clients, I get new ideas: a give and take situation.
How has your shooting style and work ethic changed in time?
At first I thought that everything can be done in photoshop because my first job was a graphic artist. Later I realized that when you play with proper lighting, emotion and posing the more impact that you get. Through practice , reading books and surfing the net and seeing other photographers works, I became inspired. Uploading your work through facebook and 500px is a great help for you to evaluate your work through their comments. If you received negative comments, consider it as a challenge to improve your work.
What are some tips you could give to people that really like your work?
Read, Study and Practice. Do not stick on one style but instead try it all. Later you will discover your own style. I got this quote from my boss (one that I respect the most). Discover that certain feeling and the rest will follow.
“Shoot with your heart” ~ Lito Sy.
