Little Big Porto - Carol Maia and Joana Gaio Photography
Little Big Porto is the latest project of two creatives Carol Maia and Joana Gaio. Joana Gaio is an award winning portuguese creative, who studied photography in Arvore and cinema at Escola Superior Artistica in Porto, while directing several movies such as Orange or The ambulance. Together with Caroline Maia, a brazilian designer widely published that sharpened her skills by studying fine arts, they decided to partner and focus their artistic synergies on a projects that re-evaluates the concept of an object.
Within The Little Porto the viewer have the opportunity to enchant their eyes, contemplate about the meanings while enjoying the wide variety of opportunities offered by object within unusual scales and scenarios such as destroying giant chocolate truffles, sailing into a multi-flavored jelly or being surrounded by colorful candies.
The basis of this project consists into incentive people to see, think and even re-evaluate the concept of an object. By using a very small scale, playing with dimension and perspective the reality turns into something new, a whole new story, waiting to be told if we just pay attention to the several meanings an object can have, be and show.
Little Big Porto represents two different views of a tiny little world, filled up with ideas and dreams, surrounded by everyday objects and sceneries. Things that gain a totally different meaning when combined with these 1cm hand painted toys. All the creative process starts with the creation of the toys and sceneries, we try to represent something that would never be shown if we just looked at a normal size.
People are stuck in the measurements, in numbers, in the everyday routine and precision. In time, in dates. The aim of this project is to let creativity flows, not only from the artists, but also from the public and the way they see the photo.
It is also a dreamy world, we have the chance to dive into jellies, be around giant candies, destroy a chocolate truffle, watch the sunset in a puddle of mudd- everything is allowed, the size is not a problem or a limit.
Living in and loving Porto, we try to advertise the local business, playing with chocolates, jellies, local restaurants, etc. We want to support Porto´s economy with our work and see the public and companies growing together, with creativity and enthusiasm.
By taking part in the contemporary art scene we want people to have fun, approach everybody to art, as an intimate calling to something bigger and necessary. Little Big Porto is the first series of a bigger project, where size is taken as an important part of the critical work.
We hope you enjoy our Little Big Porto!
